RULES AND REGULATIONS
OF THE 2nd INTERNATIONAL PIANO DUO COMPETITION “DUETTISSIMO”
KRAKOW, 8th-14th APRIL 2024
The goal of the Competition is to promote a piano duo, and Polish music, to improve the quality of performance of music for this chamber ensemble, to encourage exchange of experience between the Participants of the Competition and teachers, and to popularise musical works composed for a piano duo.
§1
1. The 2nd International Piano Duo Competition “Duettissimo”, hereinafter referred to as the Competition, is organised by the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow – the Department of Chamber Music.
2. The Competition will be held from 8th to 14th April 2024.
3. The Competition auditions will take place in the Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar Concert Hall of the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow, at Świętego Tomasza 43 (1st and 2nd stage) and in the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow at Zwierzyniecka 1 (3rd stage).
§2
1. Applications shall be sent by the 11th February 2024, with a copy of the confirmation of payment of the entry fee to the following e-mail address:

2. In order to enter the Competition, the following documents shall be sent by the 11th February 2024:
– a complete Application Form (available at the website of the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow in the 2nd International Piano Duo Competition tab), attached as the Appendix No. 1 to these Rules and Regulations,
– the entry fee in the following amount:
1) for candidates with Polish citizenship
1st category PLN 400 per duo,
2nd category PLN 600 per duo,
The payment shall be made to the following bank account:

2) for foreign candidates
1st category EUR 100 per duo,

The confirmation of payment shall be sent to the following address: konkurs.duettissimo@amuz.krakow.pl with the complete Application Form.
3. Costs of travel, accommodation and food shall be covered by the Participants themselves.
§3
1. Candidates will be notified of being included in the list of Participants by e-mail by 11th March 2024. The conditions for qualification are: the correct completion of the Application Form, meeting the formal conditions, and sending the confirmation of payment of the entry fee. The formal verification will be carried out by the Organizer.
2. The framework schedule of auditions is attached as the Appendix No. 2 to these Rules and Regulations. The organizer reserves the right to changes in the framework schedule. A detailed schedule of auditions will be placed on the website of the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow (www.amuz.krakow.pl) no later than 60 days before the beginning of the Competition.
3. The Competition will be held in the following age categories:
1st category – the sum of ages of the duo members may not exceed 42 years (on the 8th April 2024),
2nd category – the sum of ages of the duo members may not exceed 70 years (on the 8th April 2024).
4. Competition Participants are required to perform as follows:
- 1st category (25-30 minutes)
1) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – 1st part of a chosen Sonata for 4 hands or 2 pianos
2) A chosen piece by a Polish composer (except for “Paganini Variations” by Witold Lutosławski)
3) A chosen programme in the remaining time.
- 2nd category
– 1st stage (20-25 minutes)
1) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – 1st part of the chosen Sonata for 4 hands or 2 pianos
2) A chosen programme in the remaining time.
– 2nd stage (40-45 minutes)
1) A chosen piece by a Polish composer (except for “Paganini Variations” by Witold Lutosławski),
2) Two chosen pieces, of a different style.
– 3rd stage
The concerto for two pianos with orchestra (to choose):
1) Max Bruch – Concerto in A-flat minor, Op. 88a
2) Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy – Concerto in E major, MWV O 5
3) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Concerto No. 10 in E-flat major K. 365/316a
4) Francis Poulenc – Concerto in D minor, FP 61
Any changes to programme of the Competition Participant sent after the application deadline (11 march 2024) require the acceptance of the Competition Organizer.
§4
Candidates are obliged to appear for the draw regarding the order of participation on the 8th April 2024 with a valid document confirming their identity and date of birth. Candidates will be informed on the place and time of the draw no later than 30 days before the beginning of the Competition.
§5
The Competition Organizers reserve the right to qualify the maximum of 10 duos to the 2nd stage, and the maximum of 4 duos to the final in the 2nd category. In cases of dispute, the Head of Jury has the final say.
§6
1. The Competition Jury is appointed by His Magnificence Rector of the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow. The Jury members will be announced no later than 1st December 2023.
2. The Competition Jury works on the basis of separately drawn up rules and regulations, approved by the Jury members at the first meeting. Pursuant to one of the provisions of those rules and regulators, a Jury member may not award points to the Participant who is his or her pupil /student.
3. Decisions of the Competition Jury are final, irrevocable and unchallengeable.
§7
1. The prize winners will be titled the Competition Laureates.
2. The following prizes will be awarded in the Competition:
1) 1st category:
1st prize – PLN 8 000
2nd prize – PLN 5 000
3rd prize – PLN 3 000
Total prize pool: PLN 16 000
2) 2nd category:
1st prize – PLN 30 000
2nd prize – PLN 20 000
3rd prize – PLN 10 000
Special prizes:
– for the best performance of the 1st part of W. A. Mozart’s Sonata (PLN 3 000)
– for the best performance of a piece of a Polish composer (PLN 6 000)
Total prize pool: PLN 69 000
3. Based on the evaluation of the quality level of the Competition, the Jury has the right to change the classification of prizes, their number and amounts, depending on the points, with a restriction that the total prize pool remains unchanged.
4. Any other cash or in-kind prizes, sponsored by institutions or private individuals should be notified to the organisers before the commencement of the Competition. Based on its special decision, the Jury may treat those prizes as conforming or not conforming to the Rules and Regulations. Prizes and honourable mentions will be awarded to the winners during a closing ceremony of the Competition. The condition for receiving the prize is the participation in the concert of the laureates.
5. The prize will be reduced by the income tax calculated in accordance with the Polish Act on Personal Income Tax (Article 30 paragraph 1 point 2). The tax will be paid at the competent local tax office by the Competition Organizer.
§8
1. Participants of the Competition transfer, free of charge, to the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow all economic rights to the artistic performances recorded during all the stages of the Competition and the Winners’ Concert
in terms of their:
– recording,
– reproducing on all media storage devices for music and video,
– placing on the market – uploading into the computer, and into the Internet,
– playing in public,
– displaying,
– broadcasting by means of wired, wireless and satellite technology, as well as rebroadcasting and retransmission.
2. Competition Participants give their consent for the dissemination of their image recorded in connection with the Competition, and provided to the Competition organiser.
3. The personal data of Participants are processed in compliance with the provisions on the protection of personal data, and the detailed information in this regard is available in the Application Form.
4. By entering the Competition, the Participant accepts these Rules and Regulations.
5. Competition Participants confirm that they have read the information clause on personal data protection, the full text of which is included in the Application Form.
§9
1. The organiser reserves the right to cancel the Competition at any stage, and the right to change the results of the Competition. Such decisions are unappealable.
2. The organiser reserves the right to change the Rules and Regulations of the Competition at any time. Such decision is unappealable. The information on any changes of the Rules and Regulations shall be published on the Competition website run by the Organiser.
3. In any matters not regulated by these Rules and Regulations, the Organizer shall decide.
4. In the event of any discrepancies in the interpretation of the Rules and Regulations of the Competition, the Polish version of the Rules and Regulations of the Competition shall prevail.
5. In case of the cancellation of the Competition, or any of its stages, the equivalents of the fees paid for the stages that were cancelled will be returned to the Participant.
6. The Organiser reserves the right to change the number and amount of prizes.
