Extramural mode
In contrast to doctoral education, this mode excludes the structured learning phase and thus the associated methods of verification of learning outcomes.
For this reason, in this mode additional forms of verification of learning outcomes at the 8th level of the Polish Qualification Framework for candidates applying for a doctoral degree are used.
The mode of awarding a degree of doktor, in particular: the method of verification of learning outcomes for qualification at the 8th level of the Polish Qualifications Framework in the case of persons applying for a degree of doktor in extramural mode, has been determined by the Senate of the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow.
1st stage
An applicant must submit an application for verification of learning outcomes with attachments:
– a concept of a doctoral dissertation,
– a list of artistic and academic achievements,
– a copy of the diploma confirming the possession of a master’s degree or equivalent.
Applicant needs to indicate a language: Polish, English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, or Russian in the application. (The exams are conducted in Polish, English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Russian. For the exams in a foreign language, the translation is required. The translator is not provided by the Academy).
The concept of the doctoral dissertation must contain:
1) topic/subject of a doctoral dissertation and justification for its selection;
2) purpose;
3) dissertation outline;
4) main research assumptions and main bibliography items;
5) presumed programme of the artistic work;
6) expected date of submission of the PhD thesis,
The concept cannot be longer than 5 pages of a standard page.
An applicant will get information about the date and range of the examination material at least 30 days before the exams.
The examination may consist of several parts.
The examination may include, in particular:
– an artistic performance,
– an exam checking the knowledge of the main issues in the discipline of musical arts,
– an exam in the field of art history, philosophy, aesthetics,
– a discussion with the candidate.
An applicant for an extramural doctoral degree shall pay a fee for verification of learning outcomes.
After passing the exams with a positive result, candidates will receive a certificate which is valid for 2 years. With the certificate proving that the exams had the positive result, the candidate can start the second stage of the procedure.
2nd stage
A person applying for a degree of doktor in extramural mode shall submit the application for the appointment with an advisor or advisors before the commencement of the proceedings.
Applicant for a degree of doktor in extramural mode shall pay a fee for the conduct of the proceedings.
A doctoral dissertation is created under the supervision of a supervisor or supervisors (recording of an artistic work + descriptive part).
Creating a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of a supervisor or supervisors lasts from 2 months to 2 years (not less than 2 months, not more than 2 years).
The proceedings for the award of a degree of doktor shall be initiated at the request of a person who satisfies the requirements set out in Art. 186 sec. 1 points 1-3 or sec. 2 of the Act of 20 July 2018 The Law on Higher Education and Science. The application shall be accompanied by a doctoral dissertation with a positive opinion of the supervisor or supervisors.
3rd stage
To initiate proceedings regarding the award of the degree of doktor an applicant must submit an application with the following attachments:
1) a doctoral dissertation with attachments referred to in § 16 of the Regulations (in the case when the dissertation is not in written form, its description in Polish and English shall be attached): 5 CDs with recording, 5 descriptions printed in Polish, 2 descriptions printed in English,
2) positive opinion of the advisor or opinions of the advisors,
3) candidate’s artist/academic biography;
4) a copy of the document confirming possession of the professional title of magister (Master), magister inżynier (Master of Science) or an equivalent or a copy of the diploma referred to in Art. 326 sec. 2 point 2 or Article 327 sec. 2 of the Act, entitling to apply for the award of the doctoral degree in the state of whose higher education system the higher education institution that issued the diploma operates (original shall be available for inspection);
5) a copy of the diploma supplement – if it has been issued (original shall be available for inspection);
6) a statement about the lack of the supplement – if the supplement has not been issued;
7) a list of academic papers, artistic works and creative professional accomplishments and information about activities popularizing art or science;
8) information on the course of the doctoral dissertation work or other proceedings on the award of the doctoral degree – if the candidate previously applied for the award of the doctoral degree;
9) a certificate confirming that the candidate has obtained learning outcomes for qualification at the 8th level of the Polish Qualifications Framework – for candidates preparing the doctoral dissertation in extramural mode and the language certificate in accordance with the list of certificates confirming knowledge of a modern foreign language recognized by the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow);
10) an anti-plagiarism report,
11) an electronic medium containing electronic versions of all attachments;
12) [Other attachments].
The next stages of the procedure
After submitting the completed dissertation and after the Presidium of the Council for the Discipline of Musical Arts appoints a seven-person adjudicating panel and a nine-person doctoral committee in the procedure, three reviewers shall review the doctoral dissertation within 2 months from its provision.
The Presidium of the Council for the Discipline of Musical Arts appoints a seven-person adjudicating panel from members of the Council for the Discipline of Musical Arts.
The Adjudicating Panel appoints three reviewers. The reviewers shall be appointed from among persons who are not employees of the entity awarding a degree of doktor and the higher education institution (AMKP), institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, research institute, international institute, Centrum Łukasiewicz or Łukasiewicz Network institute, in which the person applying for the degree of doktor is employed.
Then, the subsequent stages of the procedure may take place: the presentation of the doctoral dissertation and the defence of the dissertation, at least 30 days after the presentation.
At the end of the doctoral defence, the doctoral committee, in a closed session, will adopt a resolution to accept the defence and to request a competent authority to confer or refuse to confer a doctoral degree.
On behalf of the Council for the Discipline of Musical Arts, the Adjudicating Panel will decide on the award of the doctoral degree.
A person who has been awarded a doctoral degree shall receive a doctoral diploma as well as a copy of that diploma. Copies of the diploma in a foreign language shall be issued at the request of that person.
